First openly LGBT local elected official

Karl Frisch was sworn in as a member of the Fairfax County School Board. He is the first openly LGBT local elected official in the history of Virginia’s largest county where he will serve on a board that has been targeted by anti-LGBTQ+ extremists for decades.

Frisch was elected on November 5, defeating anti-LGBTQ activist Andrea “Andi” Bayer by a 62.42% to 37.09% margin, receiving 18,588 of the nearly 30,000 votes cast. He ultimately garnered more votes than any candidate for school board in Providence District since it became an elected body in 1995. The seat was held by a Republican just four years ago.

Frisch was endorsed by LGBTQ Victory Fund, FCPS Pride (an affinity group for LGBTQ+ students, parents, and staff within the school district), and LGBT Democrats of Virginia as well as the Washington Post, Fairfax County Democratic Committee, Fairfax Education Association, Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, and a host of other organizations and elected officials.
