City council advances law opposing conversion therapy ban

July 13, Allentown City Council's Bill 40, known as the Appropriate Mental Health Services Ordinance, was the subject of public comment.

The ordinance, once passed in its final form, will protect LGBT youth in the City of Allentown from the harmful and unscientific practice referred to as "Conversion Therapy".

Adrian Shanker, Executive Director of Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center, is leading the community organizing effort in support of this ordinance. He said, "LGBT youth are fine just the way they are. Conversion Therapy is a harmful, unscientific practice promoted only by those who seek to do harm to LGBT people. LGBT youth deserve high-quality health care, not junk science. I'm proud of City Council for moving this critical ordinance forward."
